RBL made Private and Moving things around.
RBLFirst up is the RBL. An RBL is basically a database of blacklisted IPs that can be accessed using dns. As SeersIRC grew in popularity so did our ban list, to the point it was un-manageable. So we set about creating
http://rbl.seersirc.net/ in 2007 with the purpose of being able to keep an up-to-date list of all the IPs we caught spamming/flooding our network and creating something IRC networks could use to help keep spam in check.
It is currently sitting at around 15,500 IPs and a success rate of well over 99% as it contains ONLY IPs we see flood the network, not Ips from scans, trawling etc as some blacklists do. This is all well and good, however once people caught wind of this the popularity of our small but accurate blacklist too grew.
Originally all we asked is that those who use it help contribute to it, but 6 months down the track we have received a measly 24 IPs from other contributors. On the flip side to that we have had millions of checks run against our RBL since the start of 2008 from thousands of sources.
The bottom line is that... due to this 'abuse' of our idea of keeping it something that is free to use for those who contribute we have as of today completely blocked all outside traffic from it and are only allowing access to our own network.
If you run a network, or participate in administrating one and wish to use and contribute to the SeersIRC RBL please contact Jason or Niphyr on IRC or by email admin&at&seersirc.net and we'd be happy to set you up.
Moving things around...We will be decommissioning legend.de.eu.seersirc.net soon. This is primarily due to stability reasons. We will be looking for a stable EU host and eventually an Asia-Pacific one, but in the mean time we'll make temp.seersirc.net a mainstream server (located in Texas, USA).
We will wait until most of the users are off of legend before we make the switch, and all DNS routes to the old Ip will be changed to try and reduce the amount of people that are unable to connect.
More on this specific one via a news post and a network global when we get closer to the actual cut-off date (TBA).
Again, if you have any questions don't hesitate to contact myself or Jason.
