SeersIRC Network News
Server Migration [trinity.uk.eu.seersirc.net]
We will be migrating trinity.uk.eu.seersirc.net on November 16th 11AM to 11:30AM GMT.
This migration will bring the long awaited native IPv6 support that we've been talking about for months! (Yes that's right, I said Native IPv6 Support!)
As well as IPv6, this new server will also bring even better performance for trinity and a bigger user capacity.
If you have any questions at all, please feel free to /join #Help and ask.

We have added TeamSpeak to the services we provide. We are providing both a social public channel as well as providing private channels for groups that would desire it.

Staff Recruitment Has Ended
*** Update #2 - This application period has now closed, please view the full article for more details.
*** Update - Just to clarify we are looking for IRC Operators not HelpOps. To apply as a helpop please see the Help forums.
We are looking to expand our staff team and to try and broaden our internal skills and create new opportunities for SeersIRC.
If you are a driven individual who wants to be a part of a close team working on building a better community please consider applying.
IRC knowledge isn't our highest priority as we can easily teach the required technical skills for the IRC moderation and support portions of your role.

Lions and tigers and updates, oh my! There will be two short netsplits in the future (8:30am Feb 5th GMT) as we juggle hubs so that updates can be performed on our hub server.

#Help wants You!
SeersIRC is home to an active and friendly help team, we're looking for normal users like you to join us. As Long as you're friendly and active, you're almost there!
We need people who feel they can effectively help other users on IRC, may it be general questions about commands and effects, specific IRC commands, or how to find documents which could further help with IRC commands and knowledge. We're not asking that you know everything, only that you know and understand the basic commands and what they do, how to use the help docs (/*s HELP) and be able to work as part of a team.

New Servers and Old Servers
In order to improve network stability, and potentially expand network services, Legend.de.eu.seersirc.net is being replaced by Prophet.tx.us.seersirc.net

RBL made Private and Moving things around.
Our RBL has now been taken offline. It is only availible to the SeersIRC network but upon request we'll happily add your network(s) to our allowed list if you're willing to contribute.
In 2007 we created an RBL for SeersIRC which for those that don't know, is a blacklist of malicious IPs, that we kept up to date from IPs that have flooded our network. We created it with the goal of providing it free to all who wish to contribute, to try and keep an accurate and useful little list for IRC administrators.
It has however been largely abused with only 24 IPs of around 15,000 active coming from external sources. We have however had millions of requests from thousands of sources which is completely against the ideals behind making it public.

Updates, Updates, Updates
IRCd's, services, modules, and well, that's about it. We're going to be upgrading two of our servers soon, guardian and spirit. We ask that all users connect to irc.seersirc.net instead of specific servers, so that you're connected to servers that won't be affected.
Estimated impact time is March 31st 9am-9:15am CDT and April 1st 9am-10:30am CDT
Also, bs_fantasy_ext has been removed from services, so some of the !commands that used to work may not work any longer. If you have any questions on how to perform actions that you used to use one of these for, please join #help and we will answer any questions that arise.

!unban Exploit - Community input needed
For some time the version of Services we use has had an exploit with the !unban command. We patched this update ourselves with a couple of temporary measures but we're now in a position to provide a permanent fix through upgrading services to a newer version.
The catch is this will change how !unban works and as it's something that is quite commonly used we feel it extremely important to get input from you all before we make any changes.
This is the first of a few 'new/modified' features we'll be discussing in the coming weeks so stay tuned as we value your input!

The last 3 weeks have been the bearers of bad news and unfortunately we are announcing the departure of 3 of our team members. Leppy, Ryan and Cory have all been valuable addition to the SeersIRC community and will be sorely missed. For Ryan and Cory we wish you all the best getting things sorted out and hope to see you back in the not-to-distant future!
To Leppy, thank you for all your help, through the good times and the bad, it's been fun and won't be the same without you.

Too often I see someone saying they have 'been hacked' or someone's IRC/Forum was 'hacked'. There are many measures you can all take to improve your security and to keep your personal information and personal access just that, personal!
The basics of most related topics are covered from Encryption to Salting and check out the end of the post for a handy check-list and password strength checker.

SeersIRC 3 Years Old!
Yes, it's true! It's hard to believe that SeersIRC's 3rd birthday is upon us. The last year has gone by in a blur. Looking back, there have been many changes, big and small. Some of which are visible, like dynamic signatures and a new look website yet others less noticeable such as those which have gone on behind the scenes helping to ensure the network run more smoothly.
Over the coming year we will be bringing many more new features ranging from our long anticipated Knowledge base, more changes to our website and to our development teams pride and joy, the Emerald dream. Emerald does and will make sure that we continue to offer a dynamic and ever adapting stable, secure and safe IRC experience, plus a few surprises for you to look forward to ;)
The staff - Niphyr, Jason, Seraph, SAND, Leppy, witch, Tom, Ryan, SpaldoX and Chris - and all the SeersIRC team would like to say a huge thanks to all of you for choosing SeersIRC as your IRC home.

Netsplits - Why and what we can do about them?
From time to time we experience netsplits as all IRC Networks do. This article attempts to explain todays split as well as other information regarding netsplits including What they are?, What we do about them?, What you can do if caught in one? and of course What causes them?
Due to the nature of the internet and the IRC protocol they are inevitable but this explains just what is and can be done to minimise the impact in the event such a thing happens.

SeersIRC is now offering Dynamic Signatures in various shapes and sizes which have stats based on your current IRC status. Usage is free and they're easy to setup!
We currently have limited styles to choose from but we'll welcome anyone who wants to donate a background to us to add to our list.
